Pump Types
Three Types Of Pool Pumps
Being Phased Out
Single Speed
Runs at one speed — full power, all the time. Lowest upfront cost but highest operating cost. Most states are now mandating variable speed for new installations.
Lowest upfront cost
Highest energy cost — runs full power constantly
Banned or restricted in many states
No energy rebates available
Middle Ground
Dual Speed
Two settings — high and low. Run low for filtration, high for vacuuming or features. Better than single speed but still limited compared to variable speed.
Lower energy cost than single speed on low setting
Lower upfront cost than variable speed
Only two speeds — not as efficient as variable
Still restricted in some states
Recommended · Most Efficient
Variable Speed
Runs at any speed you set. Low for daily filtration, higher for vacuuming or features. Saves $500–$1,500 per year vs. single speed. Pays for itself in one to two seasons.
50–90% energy savings vs. single speed
Qualifies for utility rebates in many areas
Quieter operation at lower speeds
Required in most states for new installations
Energy Savings
The Real Energy Savings
$500–$1,500 In Annual Energy Savings
A standard 1.5 HP single speed pump running 8 hours per day costs approximately $600–$900 per year in electricity. A variable speed pump on the same schedule costs $100–$200 per year.
Most variable speed pumps pay for the price difference over a single speed within 1–2 pool seasons. After that, the savings are pure money back every year.
$500–$1,500 typical annual energy savings
1–2 season payback period vs. single speed
Utility rebates available in many states — up to $200
Quieter — variable speed at low RPM is near-silent
Annual Energy Cost Comparison
Single Speed (1.5 HP) ~$800/yr
Dual Speed (on low) ~$350/yr
Variable Speed ~$150/yr
Estimates based on 8 hrs/day at $0.15/kWh. Actual savings vary by pool size, run time, and local electricity rates.

Brands
Brand Guide — Honest Rundown
Best Overall
Hayward
Most widely used brand in residential pools. EcoStar and MaxFlo VS are
excellent variable speed options. Parts are everywhere. Dealers are
everywhere. Strong warranty support.
Premium Option
Pentair
IntelliFlo is the gold standard variable speed pump. More expensive than
Hayward but arguably the most efficient and quietest. Great for
automation integration and larger pools.
Value Pick
Blue Torrent / Others
Aftermarket variable speed pumps at lower price points. Performance is
generally solid but parts availability and dealer support are more
limited than Hayward or Pentair.
