Three Pool Types.
Very Different Decisions.

The right pool isn't the most expensive one — it's the one that fits your yard, your budget, and how you actually plan to use it. Here's a plain-English overview of each option.

Above Ground Pool Kits

Starting At

$1,649

Steel and resin frame kits for every backyard and budget. Check individual product pages for exact kit contents — we'll help you build the right package. Most kits can be installed in a weekend by the confident DIYer.

Best For

Inground Pool Kits

Starting At

$8,499

Our inground kits use professional-grade steel and polymer panels— the same quality trusted by pool builders nationwide. Our panels carry a lifetime warranty and are built to the same standard contractors rely on. You get pro-grade materials at a DIY price — and we'll walk you through every step of the install.

Best For

Semi-Inground Pool Kits

Starting At

$5,999

Semi-inground pools can be buried up to 100% — meaning you get an inground aesthetic without the full excavation cost. They pair beautifully with existing decking and retaining walls. If your yard isn't flat, this is almost always the right call.

The Install Process

What Installation Actually Looks Like

Timeline and effort vary dramatically across pool types. Here's what the process looks like from start to swimming.

Above Ground

01

Level Your Site

Clear and level an area slightly larger than your pool. Most homeowners handle this with a rake and sand. No concrete needed.

02

Assemble the Wall

Steel or resin panels connect with rails and uprights. Two people and half a day. No special tools required.

03

Drop Liner & Fill

Set the liner, connect skimmer and return fitting, start filling. You're swimming in 24–48 hours.

04

Wire the Pump

The only step requiring a professional — a licensed electrician wires the pump. Usually a few hours of work.

Semi-Inground

01

Partial Excavation

Excavator digs to your desired burial depth — typically 12"–24" into grade. Far less disruptive than full inground excavation.

02

Set & Backfill

Pool is set in the partial excavation, backfilled, and leveled. Contractor recommended. 2–5 days of work.

03

Liner & Equipment

Liner installs similarly to above ground. Pump and filter connect and are wired by an electrician.

04

Deck Integration

Deck ties into the pool surround to create a finished, integrated look. Total timeline: 1–2 weeks.

Inground

01

Permits & Planning

Pull permits, finalize pool placement, arrange utility locates. Permitting alone can take 2–6 weeks depending on your municipality.

02

Full Excavation

Full excavation to pool depth. 1–2 days of machine work. Dirt haul-away is a separate cost.

03

Wall & Plumbing

Steel or polymer panels set and backfilled. Plumbing rough-in happens at this stage. 2–5 days contractor work.

04

Liner, Coping & Deck

Liner drops in, coping is set, electrical connects, deck or concrete surround goes in last. Total timeline: 6–12 weeks.

Decision Framework

Which Pool Is Actually Right for You?

The best pool is the one that fits your real situation — not the one with the biggest marketing budget. Here's the honest breakdown.

Choose Above Ground If...

Choose Semi-Inground If...

Choose Inground If...

Can I install an above ground pool myself?

Yes — above ground pool kits are designed for homeowner installation. Most installs take two people and one to two days. The only part that typically requires a professional is wiring the pump, which must be done by a licensed electrician.

Can any above ground pool be partially buried?

No — and this is important. Burying a standard above ground pool voids the warranty and creates a structural risk. Semi-inground pools are purpose-built with reinforced walls rated for partial burial. Always use a pool that is specifically rated for the depth you want to bury it.

Do I need a permit for an above ground pool?

It depends on your municipality. Many areas require a permit for pools over a certain size or depth. Check with your local building department before installation. Inground pools almost always require permits regardless of location.

What does a Poolzilla inground kit include?

Our inground kits include the pool wall panels (steel or polymer), liner, coping, step unit, pump, filter, skimmer, and return fittings — everything that goes in the ground. Your contractor handles excavation, backfill, electrical, plumbing, and the deck surround.

How long does an inground pool last vs. above ground?

A well-maintained inground steel wall pool typically lasts 30–50+ years, though the liner needs replacement every 10–15 years. Above ground pools typically last 15–25 years. Semi-inground pools fall in between at 20–30 years.

When should I order to swim this season?

For above ground pools, order by early May to ensure delivery before Memorial Day. For inground pools, order as early as possible — permitting, excavation scheduling, and installation can take 6–12 weeks. Don't wait until June and expect to swim that summer.

Do you ship everywhere?

Above ground pool kits ship free to most of the continental US. Inground and semi-inground kits ship via freight — contact us for a shipping quote based on your location and kit size. Alaska and Hawaii are available on a quote basis.
