Before You Start

Tools And Materials You Need

Have everything on this list before you start. Most delays come from mid-build hardware store runs.

Long Level + String Line

Used to verify the ground is level across the full footprint before laying sand. A 6-foot or longer level is ideal.

Rubber Mallet

For seating bottom rails and adjusting uprights without damaging frame components. Do not use a metal hammer.

Cordless Drill

Most frame hardware uses a single screw size. One drill handles everything โ€” check your manual for the correct bit size.

Masonry Sand โ€” 1โ€“2 Tons

Budget 1 ton for an 18' round, 2 tons for a 24' round. Use masonry or washed concrete sand โ€” not play sand.

Garden Hose

Long enough to reach from your water source to the pool center. You will also use it to wet the sand base during installation.

Outdoor GFCI Outlet

Your pump needs a dedicated outdoor outlet. Do not use an extension cord long-term โ€” a proper outlet is required for safety.

Steps 01โ€“03

Site Prep And Sand Base

01

Choose Your Location

3 feet clearance on all sides. Away from overhead power lines (10 feet minimum). Good sun exposure. Away from tree roots and low-drainage areas. Call 811 before digging โ€” check for buried utilities.

02

Mark, Clear And Level

Drive a center stake, mark your circumference plus 1 foot. Remove all sod, vegetation, rocks, and roots. Level within 1โ€“2 inches across the full footprint โ€” always remove high spots, never add fill dirt.

03

Lay And Tamp The Sand Base

Spread 2โ€“3 inches of masonry sand evenly. Lightly wet with a garden hose, then tamp firm. Create a slight cove where sand meets the wall. Add foam cove before liner installation to protect against tears.

Steps 04โ€“07

Frame Assembly And Liner Installation

04

Lay Bottom Rails And Uprights

Connect bottom rails to form the circular footprint. Place one cinder block or paver under each upright position. Verify the diameter is consistent โ€” measure across the center in multiple directions.

05

Roll Out The Wall

Unroll the wall inside the bottom rail track. This takes 2โ€“3 people โ€” wear gloves, the steel edge can be sharp. Orient skimmer and return cutouts toward your equipment pad side.

06

Attach Uprights And Top Rails

Slide each upright into position. Attach top rails between uprights. Verify the pool is round before fully tightening. Snug is enough โ€” do not overtighten.

07

Drop The Liner

Warm the liner in sun for 30โ€“60 minutes first โ€” warm vinyl stretches more easily. Overlap: drape over wall, secure with top rails. Unibead: snap bead into receiver channel as you work around. Work out all wrinkles before adding water.

Steps 08โ€“10

Fill, Equipment And Water Chemistry

08

Begin Filling

Place the hose at the center of the pool floor and fill slowly. Monitor the liner and smooth any wrinkles by hand before they set. Stay nearby during the first few inches of fill.

09

Install Skimmer And Connect Pump

When water reaches the skimmer cutout, install the skimmer and return fitting. Connect pump to skimmer and filter. Fill the pump strainer basket with water before first start โ€” running a dry pump damages the seal.

10

Balance Your Water

Test immediately after filling. Balance in this order: Total Alkalinity โ†’ pH โ†’ Calcium Hardness โ†’ Chlorine โ†’ Cyanuric Acid. Retest after 24 hours before swimming.
