There’s nothing quite like the excitement of getting a new pool! We’re all about making swimming simple, safe, and fun. And unfortunately, that starts with a little prep work before you even break out the first pool float.
Start with the Basics:
Before building begins, contact your local zoning or permitting office. Different places hold different requirements when it comes to pool permits, fencing, and property setbacks, and those rules apply to above ground pools too! Utility lines are important to consider, whether they’re overhead or shallow underground. Contact your utility company to mark the lines before beginning.
🏡 Heads-up: If your pool is less than 48 inches tall (or partially buried), your area might require a safety fence. Even taller models may need fencing if a deck is involved!
Picking the Right Spot
Your pool needs more than just an open spot in the backyard:
-
Flat & Level Ground: Slightly sloped yards can spell big trouble, leading to uneven water levels, structural stress, and potential liner damage. Ensuring the placement is level ensures the longevity and safety of your pool.
-
Sunlight vs. Shade: A mix of sun and shade is ideal. Too much shade can lead to colder water and more cleaning, while constant direct sun may heat things up more than you’d like (and burn through chlorine faster, causing algae!).
- Nearby Power: To ensure an outlet is available for all the pool equipment. Don’t try DIY electrical work near water, especially with a pool pump. Hire an electrician to make sure your pool is powered safely!
Prepping the Ground (This Part Matters!)
Measure & Mark
You’ll want to mark out a space that allows for at least a one-foot buffer all around for landscaping or maintenance. Mark the center of the pool with a stake, and tie a string to the center stake. Walk in a full circle with spray paint or another marking device.
Get Level
Time to dig in — literally. Even if it looks flat, the ground probably isn’t. Use a string level, a carpenter’s level on a long 2x4, or even a laser level if you’ve got one. Level the ground by removing high spots.
💡 A flat base now saves you time, money, and headaches later.
Time to Check the Foundation
Allow the base to sit overnight, to ensure any natural shifting or concerning spots can be easily caught.
And then, you're ready for installation!
Bonus Upgrades for an Easy Pool!
-
Pool Cove: Prevents stretching and early wear on above-ground pool liners, keeps the liner from stretching or tearing at the base seam.
-
Floor Pad: Extra assurance to prevent sharp objects and plants from pushing through the bottom.
-
Water Test Kits & Maintenance Tools: Keep your water balanced and sparkling.
A little prep goes a long way! Whether you’re a DIYer or getting some pool-pro help, having the right plan and the right products will set the stage.
